Aviation Research

The first unpowered heavier-than-air flight in Australia was made by Lawrence Hargrave on November 12th 1894, when he was lifted 16 feet off the ground by his box kites at Stanwell Park, New South Wales. Later, the first free flight of a heavier-than-air machine in Australia was achieved by George Taylor on December 5th 1909, flying an unpowered glider he had designed at Narrabeen Beach. Three months later Harry Houdini (Ehrich Weiss), conducted the first successful, controlled, and sustained powered flight in Australia at Diggers Rest, Victoria, on March 18, 1910, in a Voisin biplane.
