Airways and Airlines
After the horrors of World War One, Australians began a fascination with flight, it was not an uncommon sight at fairs and country shows to see Joy flights or joy-riding being offered to the public for a fee and for many pilots it became a popular and lucrative business. This boom of public joy flights was soon to hit a hurdle with a rowing number of crashes, some fatal, it forced the implementation of stricter guidelines and the eventual passing of the Air Navigation Act of 1920.
When Hudson Fysh, Paul McGinness and Fergus McMaster registered the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Ltd on November 16th, 1920 it marked the first of soon to be numerous aerial services in the country. A year later in the west Norman Brierly was granted the first regular domestic airmail service and Western Australian Airways Ltd was established. Over the next few decades numerous airways were founded and many either ceased to exist or were merged into a larger airline.
